FROM THE VAULTS: BLACK LEOTARD FRONT (DELIA GONZALEZ & GAVIN RUSSOM) PERFORMANCE (RARE FOOTAGE)
In mid-00s Gavin Russom & Delia Gonzalez helped to fuel and define neue "american kosmische" wave with brilliant "Days Of Mars". With artists like Daniel Lopatin & Emeralds getting universal critical acclaim - it is fair to say that this US synth under-(or should I say upper)ground is currently in full bloom. But, before fancy records with DFA, guys were apparently trying to revive performance art a-la "less radical COUM Transmissions" as Black Leotard Front. Below is a hilarious rare footage of one of their "aktions" salvaged from the dusty pile of DVDs resting in the corner of my studio.

ANGLES: MANDATORY ATTENDANCE
Here is a quick list of most anticipated upcoming music and art shows in Montreal area. There is absolutely no excuse to miss any of them.
August 14: Addison Groove, Scuba, Appleblim (Jean-Drapeau Parc)
Crème de la crème of UK-centric dance music producers get together for bass-heavy showcase in Montreal's Jean-Drapeau Parc. Simultaneously, this is the best programming choice that Piknik Elektronic had to offer this summer.
August 25: OoOoo, Holy Other, Tri Angle DJs (Il Motore)
London-based Tri Angle label exists for less than a year, but Robin Carolan's curatorial sense in 2011 can actually make it label of the year. For Tri Angle showcase in Il Motore we are proposed two of their most interesting signings: OoOoo and Holy Other. Sets from label's DJs promise to be as adventurous as it can get.
September 17: Toro Y Moi (La Tulipe)
With new record this year, Toro Y Moi proved that he is way smarter than anyone in "chillwave" upstarts crowd. Funk, soul and disco vibes of his new show will be perfect finale for the summer.
September 21: Ford & Lopatin + Hippos In Tanks Label Showcase (SAT)
One more label showcase as part of Montreal's Pop Festival. This time it's Hippos In Tanks with the dream-team roster of Ford & Lopatin (ex-Games), Hype Williams, Laurel Halo, Autre Ne Veut and D'Eon. Main event is obviously premiere of Ford & Lopatin show, based on their immaculate debut "Channel Pressure". Expect a lot of synths, glowing fluorescent lamps and 80s sci-fi soundtracks atmospherics.
September 30: Hans-Joachim Roedelius (La Sala Rossa)
If Cluster or Harmonia does not tell you anything - it is irreparable!!!
October 2: James Blake (Club Soda)
The most overblown crossover artist of recent years with surprisingly impeccable credentials. He still can't decide if he is new Aphex Twin or soul diva and all the more interesting for it.
October 7: Portishead (Quai Jacques-Cartier)
Absolute event of the fall. Especially if the rumors of the new album are true. Bring sweaters because the show is apparently outdoors and October in Montreal is unpredictable.
October 15: Zola Jesus (Il Motore)
She pulled of goth-revival while simultaneously staying fancy and recording weird dub experiments with LA Vampires. If any female artist can actually replicate Bjork crossover success of the 90s in modern settings - it's her.
November 9: Plaid (SAT)
Modern electronic and dance music owes a lot to this duet. Even though lately they signed their names under dubious projects it can change with the release of the new album. At least new track and video "35 Summers" raise expectations higher than they could be. With recent resurgence of interest in early and mid-90s electronic music it is a perfect timing for loud comeback.
Also don't forget to visit frollowing exhibitions:
"Les Ballets russes de Diaghilev" in Musée National des Beaux Arts.
"Caravaggio and His Followers in Rome" + "Laura Knight" + "Fred Herzog" in the National Gallery of Canada.
Berlinde De Bruyckere / John Currin exhibition in DHC/ART gallery
"The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier" in Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

TANGENTS: PLAID
Although Plaid has kind of "lost it" after the release of "Double Figure" back in 2001, they are still highly respected sound artists with at least 3 albums to hold on to. High profile remixes and long-time affiliation with Warp and Black Dog also helps the case. Their new record "Scintilli" may or may not be return to form, but forthcoming show in Montreal's SAT and stunning new video directed by Richie Burridge leave a hope for the best.
